A human link to break all kinds of division

The Strait of Hormuz has been famous for a long time as a place of troubles. It settles between Oman and Iran, two Islamic countries with single and strong identities. Both are from the same root: Islam; but, because of the strategic location and the strait border, they are two different states! Therefore, designing this bridge is a big chance to change this picture. Usually, a bridge links two different lands with two different cultures. When there is difference, there is division and when there is division, there is conflict!

So how can we get rid of this division and make this two states as one?

I propose to connect these two countries with two cultural identities with one of the main recognizable figure of Islam: the Crescent. It represents the new moon in the Islamic Lunar calendar and it is the first day of the month of Ramadan. The Crescent is considered as the symbol of new beginning. Moreover it is also the representation in occidental countries of the moon and the night. And at night, when everybody is sleeping, there’s only room for peace and quietness!

To do more than a simple physical link by building a bridge, it is important to lose the feelings of borders to be eliminated, the division to be cut and the people to be smoothly connected. Metaphorically the bridge will use the human as a stone for its foundation, which gives a very practical usage of space and allows an innovative construction that creates a dynamic metropolis and a source of green energy. This city represents a human bridge with no differences nor a division, just one single entity to forget the past troubles in the Strait of Hormuz to create a new beginning without a border between Oman and Iran.

The city grows under the bridge to protect the inhabitants of the strong sunshine. This nice landscape travelling crescent sets in this smooth curve will be the city of quietness, pollution-free and eco-friendly. The road on the top is totally separate to the building level. The solar panel and the wind turbines will convert the strong sunshine and the wind into the main sources of energy supply. A green network of public transport link all the building together and with the rest of the country. Some sky-garden take place inside the towers aims at cooling the building, giving a green aesthetics and creating a natural landscapes for rest and relaxation.

So who wants to get a room in this city, who wants to be part of this New Beginning?

Comment pouvons-nous protéger nos vélos contre le vandalisme, le vol et les intempéries ?

Cette problématique nous mène à deux alternatives :

– nous avons le choix entre mettre hors de portée les vélos

ou

– les protéger avec une structure solide et imperméable.

La première alternative propose des solutions complexes, volumineuses et onéreuses (Bike tree ou parking à vélos enterré japonais), j’ai ainsi opté pour la deuxième en essayant d’améliorer les systèmes de protections déjà existants. Ces derniers révèlent les problèmes suivants : les abris sont communs, leur intégration est négligée et leur encombrement visuel est souvent trop important.

Mon projet propose un petit coin de pelouse.

Des coquilles vides y sont échouées et peuvent accueillir des vélos comme un coquillage vide peut recevoir un bernard-l’hermite et le protéger des prédateurs. Ces coques se déploient et se recroquevillent sur les vélos, les protégeant ainsi contre le vandalisme, le vol, les intempéries…

La nuit, ces curieuses coquilles s’animent avec des éclairages qui révèlent la présence ou l’absence de locataire.

Cet ensemble de quatre abris à vélos repose sur un socle en acier galvanisé qui reprend les dimensions d’une place de parking standard (2,5 x 5 m) à une hauteur de 20cm. Un système de rétention d’eau de pluie, composé d’un substrat de 15 cm et d’un lit d’herbe, rempli le fond du socle métallique. Celui-ci permettra de réduire le débit des eaux ruisselantes des caniveaux.

Ce socle présente quatre entailles. Celles-ci assurent une stabilité verticale aux vélos et les guident jusqu’aux abris.

Les abris à vélos sont constitués de cinq plaques d’acier recyclé, elles sont cintrées et assemblées en pivot sur un arbre solidaire d’une plaque métallique antidérapante. Ces coques peuvent ainsi se replier autour du vélo et se fermer à l’aide d’un verrou, le protégeant ainsi des intempéries et de tout acte de vandalisme. Une fois déployés, ils mesurent : l = 200, L= 80, h=120 cm, afin d’accueillir tout type de vélos.

Des fentes dans les coques d’un centimètre de large laissent apercevoir le vélo mais empêchent toute intrusion.

La borne d’informations est réalisée avec deux feuilles d’acier enroulées. Elle permet de signaler l’ensemble, et d’apporter les explications nécessaires au bon fonctionnement des abris. A son sommet, des capteurs photovoltaïques pourront récolter l’énergie solaire pour la convertir en électricité. Celle-ci permettra d’éclairer, la nuit tombée, les LED des abris à vélo et les indications de la borne d’information.

La mise en place est facilitée par les points d’ancrage qui permettent à un camion-grue de transporter et de déplacer facilement l’ouvrage. L’entretien est simplifié par la possibilité de changer un abri sans avoir à déplacer tout l’ensemble.

Le projet propose une variante économique. Les coquilles peuvent être alignées côte à côte et occuper ainsi six abris à vélos sur une place de parking.
